Blind Flange Face & Gasket Types

USA Industries supplies blind flanges in all standard face configurations — Flat Face, Raised Face, and Ring Type Joint (RTJ) — as well as all RTJ gasket profiles including Oval, Octagonal, RX, and BX types for high-pressure service.

Blind Flange Face Types and RTJ Gasket Types — Flat Face, Raised Face, RTJ Female, Type R Oval, Type R Octagonal, Type RX, Type BX
Face Types
Flat Face (FF) — Full flat surface; low-pressure, cast iron mating flanges
Raised Face (RF) — Most common; concentrates bolt load on gasket. 1/16" height (<400#), 1/4" (400# & above)
RTJ Female — Ring groove accepts solid metal gasket; high-pressure & high-temp service
RTJ Male — Raised ring mates to RTJ female; metal-to-metal seal for critical service
RTJ Gasket Types
Type R — Oval — Older standard; seats on two line contacts
Type R — Octagonal — Higher efficiency than oval; most common RTJ type
Type RX — Pressure-energized; self-sealing under load; wellhead service
Type BX — API 6BX; fully pressure-energized for subsea and extreme-pressure applications
Selection Guide

Choosing the Right Blind Flange

Blind flange selection involves matching the pressure rating, face type, material, and size to your specific piping system. Use the comparison table and quick finder below to identify the right configuration before you order — or call our team to confirm.

Face Type Comparison

Face Type Pressure Rating Gasket Required Most Common Use Available From USA Industries
Flat Face (FF) 150# – 300# Full-face gasket Cast iron flanges, low-pressure utility systems
Raised Face (RF) 150# – 2500# Ring or spiral wound gasket General industrial — most common configuration
RTJ Female 300# – 2500# Solid metal ring gasket High-pressure, high-temperature critical service
RTJ Male 300# – 2500# Mates to RTJ Female groove Metal-to-metal seal, extreme service conditions

Pressure Rating Quick Reference

ASME Class Common Applications Typical Industries Standard Face In Stock
150# Low-pressure utility, water, steam Water treatment, HVAC, general utility Flat or Raised Face
300# Moderate pressure process service Chemical, petrochemical, general process Raised Face
600# Higher pressure process lines Refining, oil & gas, power generation Raised Face or RTJ
900# High-pressure service lines Refineries, offshore platforms RTJ or Raised Face
1500# Very high-pressure critical service Upstream oil & gas, high-pressure process RTJ
2500# Extreme pressure — specialty applications Wellhead, subsea, high-pressure chemical RTJ
Not Sure What You Need?
Need Standard Process Isolation 150# – 600# Raised Face — most common configuration, stocked in CS and SS
Need High Pressure + High Temp 900# – 2500# RTJ — metal-to-metal seal, available in exotic alloys
Need Large Diameter (26"+) ASME B16.47 Series A or B — up to 96", custom manufactured to your specs
Need Vent or Port NPT or SW port — middle, top, or bottom location, multiple ports available
Need Exotic Alloy Monel, Inconel, Hastelloy, Titanium, Duplex SS and more — custom to your material spec
Need Rental vs. Purchase Both available — rental lowers upfront cost, same-day shipping on stocked items

What Is a Blind Flange?

A blind flange is a solid flange with no bore — it bolts directly to a mating flange to seal off the end of a pipe, nozzle, or pressure vessel opening. Unlike a weld cap, a blind flange is bolted in place and can be removed, making it ideal for systems that require periodic access, testing, or future expansion.

Blind flanges are manufactured to ASME B16.5 (up to 24") and ASME B16.47 Series A and B (26" and larger), and are available in all standard pressure classes from 150# to 2500#.

What Are Blind Flanges Used For?

Blind flanges serve three primary functions in industrial piping systems:

  • Maintenance Isolation — Seal a pipeline section for repairs or modifications without shutting down the entire system, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency
  • Pressure Testing — Provide a temporary closure for hydrostatic or pneumatic testing to verify structural integrity and detect leaks before commissioning
  • Permanent Decommissioning — Permanently seal pipeline sections being abandoned or taken out of service
  • Future Access Points — Install now for future system tie-ins, nozzle connections, or instrumentation access

Common industries include oil and gas refineries, petrochemical plants, power generation facilities, offshore platforms, chemical processing, and water treatment.

Blind Flange Material Options

The flange material should match or be compatible with the pipe material and process fluid to prevent corrosion and ensure long-term seal integrity.

  • SA516 Grade 70 Carbon Steel — Standard stocked material for most general industrial applications
  • A105 Carbon Steel — Forged carbon steel for higher-pressure service
  • 304 & 316 Stainless Steel — Corrosion-resistant, widely stocked in multiple sizes and ratings
  • Duplex & Super Duplex Stainless — High strength and corrosion resistance for demanding environments
  • Monel, Inconel, Incoloy, Hastelloy — Extreme temperature and chemical resistance
  • Titanium — Chemical processing and highly corrosive services
  • Custom alloys available — A182, A350, B160, and more on request

How to Select the Right Blind Flange

Selecting the correct blind flange requires matching five key parameters to your piping system:

  • Pipe size (NPS) and ASME pressure class (150# through 2500#)
  • Face type — Flat Face, Raised Face, or Ring Type Joint (RTJ)
  • Material — must be compatible with process fluid and temperature
  • ASME standard — B16.5 for 1/2" to 24", B16.47 Series A or B for 26" and larger
  • Port or vent requirements — NPT or SW, location, and number of ports
