GripSafe XL for Large Diameter Piping Systems
Advanced High-Pressure Isolation & Testing Technology
The GripSafe XL represents a breakthrough in large-bore pipe testing technology. Designed for 36"-48" pipe outer diameters, this patented system eliminates the need for traditional welded end caps while maintaining the ability to hold pressures up to the pipe's yield point.
Built on over 40 years of USA Industries' engineering excellence and more than nine years of dedicated R&D, GripSafe XL introduces revolutionary wedge-based gripping technology that fundamentally transforms how industrial facilities approach pressure testing on large diameter piping systems.
The Large-Bore Testing Challenge
Large diameter piping systems present unique testing challenges. At just 500 PSI, a 36" pipe generates over 500,000 pounds of force, while a 48" system exceeds 900,000 pounds. These extreme forces have traditionally necessitated time-consuming, expensive welded end caps.
GripSafe XL addresses this challenge through patented wedge-based gripping technology that redistributes forces across the pipe wall, eliminating pressure points while providing reliable containment at pressures up to the pipe's yield point.
The system's multi-durometer seal design and Gritlock® coated wedges work in concert to create thousands of microscopic contact points, ensuring grip strength increases proportionally with test pressure while protecting pipe integrity.

Installation & Operation
Understanding the GripSafe XL installation process
Preparation
Inspect pipe end for cleanliness and dimensional compliance. Verify pipe schedule and material specification match plug sizing. Ensure all components are present and in good condition.
Insertion
Insert plug assembly into pipe opening. Position plug at proper depth according to specifications. Align wedge system with pipe axis for optimal load distribution.
Seal Expansion
Torque seal expansion nuts to specified values in proper sequence. Multi-durometer seals expand to create primary pressure barrier. Verify seal contact around entire circumference.
Testing
Perform hydrostatic or pneumatic test according to project specifications. Wedge system automatically engages under pressure, increasing grip strength. Monitor test pressure and duration per requirements.
Removal
Release test pressure completely. Loosen seal expansion nuts in reverse sequence. Extract plug assembly from pipe. Inspect components for next use.
